JUNE FAMILY HISTORY STORIES

BRIGHAM YOUNG           1 June 1801         Marilee’s great great grandfather

This is a quote from a great grandchild of Brigham Young " Great Grandfather was good to look at and always immaculate in his dress. He was of Medium height, rather large, with beautiful auburn curly hair and a high brow that was broad and intelligent. He had a long straight nose, and a chin that denoted character and firmness. He had well-shaped hands and feet, a clear white skin and blue eyes. His eyes radiated kindness and love and tenderness. His mouth was firm and commanded the respect of all with whom he came in contact."

I have copies of some letters that my great grandfather, Brigham Morris Young, received as a missionary in the Hawaiian Islands from his father Brigham Young.  They reflect a very loving, caring and personable father.  A father who gave him advice, encouragement in learning the difficult language, inquired about his health, food and clothing needs and gave him the news of the day.  He even mentions his schedule, meetings and inspiration for applying the united order in southern Utah.  

OLIVIA THANKFUL PRATT (DRIGGS)         1 June 1841   Ricks great great grandmother

Olivia was the daughter of Parley P Pratt and Mary Ann Frost (Pratt). She was born in Manchester England when her parents were serving a mission there.  When they returned from their mission, the Prophet Joseph Smith met them at the docks and carried Olivia to his home.  Olivia crossed the plains wither mother and sister and brother. They settled in Battle Creek (which became Pleasant Grove).  She married Benjamin W. Driggs when she was almost 16 and he was 20. They had 12 children and lived out their lives in Pleasant Grove Utah.

Florence was a beautiful and talented young woman.  She sang, wrote poetry, acted and played the organ.  Her family was very musical and large and they had a family chorus. Later Florence’s brother, King Driggs, daughters would become the famous King Sisters.  Florence was a teacher and met another teacher Douglas Todd whom she married in the Logan Temple.  They had one daughter named Florence when they moved to Logan so Douglas could teach at Brigham Young College.  They had a son, Douglas Jr but Florence died 5 weeks after from an infection unknowingly brought by the midwife.
