OCTOBER FAMILY HISTORY BIRTHDAYS

GEORGE JOHN ROSS                                 5 OCTOBER 1869                          Salt Lake City Utah
The story I have of George Ross comes from his wife’s history.  They associated for several years in social groups.  When they decided to marry George’s mother became blind and he postponed the marriage.  Then he became sick with lead poisoning and after hard work and special diets he recovered from that and got the doctors okay that he could have a family.  His wife, Mary Romney Ross, was willing to take care of his blind mother and did so in their home for 8 years.  They had 3 beautiful daughters and after some time a son.  When the son was 21/2 years old George was coming home in a buggy and the buggy was hit by a car, owned by a wealthy doctor.  He never regained consciousness and died 36 hours later.  It was the first fatal auto accident in Utah.  It happened that Mary was newly pregnant with another son.  Some of you met Uncle Chick, grandma Doxey’s Uncle. Chick married Harold B Lee’s sister.                                                          Marilee’s Great Grandfather

I do not know anything about Robert except he was my Grandma Doxey's grandfather.

EMMA PEARL HAYES     OCTOBER 20 1879     SALT LAKE CITY UTAH
Emma has written a personal history it is in the “Doxey Ancestry Book”.  She was encouraged to write a life history by her children (my Grandpa Doxey) and she says that she felt it could not be done.  She had only an eighth grade education and felt inadequate.  It says something about her character that she decided to give it a try and wrote her history at the age of 84.  She was married to Thomas Graham Doxey.  They had 8 children.  She tells the story of being on vacation with her husband Tom, in San Francisco in 1906.  They experienced the big earthquake on April 6.  She was not sure if they would ever get back home to their children.  Emma was my great grandma and we would visit her in downtown SLC in her little apartment on South Temple.  She always passed out MM’s.  That is where I learned to love them.  I remember her best as the matriarch of the Doxey reunions that were held every summer.      Marilee's Great Grandma

DOUGLAS MCLAIN TODD SR.     31 OCTOBER 1860     CLOVER UTAH
Douglas was a teacher and taught science and chemistry. He had received his education at Brigham Young Academy and studied under Karl Maeser and James Talmage.  He was asked to teach chemistry and physics at Brigham Young College in Logan Utah and taught for 16 years.  He bought 160 acres in Rexburg Idaho to farm to support his family since teaching did not give him enough income.  He was doing well as a farmer and then the church asked him to establish the Rexburg Academy and he became the first president of what is now BYU Idaho. He struggled financially the rest of his life but was instrumental in helping the church colleges become established.                                                                        Rick’s Great Grandpa

ROBERT TAYLOR BURTON      25 OCTOBER 1821      AMHERSTBURG, CANADA
Yes, you have some Canadian blood.  Robert was baptized when he was 19.  There are some interesting facts about his life.  He had a distinguished career in military and public life.  He worked as a body guard for Brigham Young.  He was on active duty in the Nauvoo Legion when Joseph Smith was assassinated.    He was appointed the first federal tax collector for the Utah territory by Abraham Lincoln. He fought Indians. He was an expert horseman and member of the “Minute Men” and on October 5 1856 He was elected 3rd in command of the first relief party to rescue the handcart companies.  His deathbed counsel to his sons was “Never disgrace the Burton name; Be faithful to the Church; Keep the family together; and be kind to the poor.”
